Had it happen on my Calvy Mitchel a few years ago on the 8mm hose to the carb - I replaced the old (fuel resistant) hose with new hose resistant to unleaded petrol! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doug" <[email protected]>

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Fuel hose or not fuel hose, that is the question

Hi all again,

Not only did I break my 4th screen yesterday, I also developed an
alarming puddle of fuel on the floor at the petrol station. I've
smelt a bit of fuel for a while now, but only when driving
occasionally so I put it down to the exhaust. I never had a puddle on
the driveway so ignorred it.

However, you can hardly ignore a puddle of fuel when filling up, so I
drove home carefully and jacked the rear end up and took off the
wheel. I poked and squeezed anything fuel related but it didn't take
long to find the source of the leak - the fuel filler hose has
completely perished. It's all swollen out around the jubilee clips,
and if you squeeze it hundreds of fine cracks appear which go down
deep into the rubber. The fuel only goes into the hose when filling
up or when going round left hand bends, so that's why there was never
a drip while stationary, even with the engine running. I guess some
of the cracks finally when all the way through, and that's why I never
noticed a leak on the forecourt before (also I've been driving it so
little I haven't filled up for 2 months).

It's the 2inch i.d. one between the filler and the tank, and I can't
remember if it came in the original kit or not, but I think it may
have done so I'm just warning any Xtreme owners to go and check it.
Even if it didn't come from Quantum I would definitely only have
fitted what I thought was fuel resistant hose, but clearly it isn't as
the car is 5 years old. A new hose from Merlin just set me back £35
including postage, but it's a small price to pay when safety's
concerned. I guess some MoTs might pick it up, but mine never did, so
don't rely on that.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

Cheers

Doug
