I know what you mean about the odd noises (got a horrible resonance on the silencer cover at 2,500 rpm), it doesn't help with everyone turning their heads and asking q's - feel rather self conscious.
At the moment it is a standard 1.6 Pinto, type 9 gearbox all from sierra donor (new brakes, different seats), I am getting 57 BHP max at the rear wheels (thats both of them, not each!) My plan is to migrate to a Zetec/Duratec in a year or so- I will be interested to see what Quantums 'standard' package is - I'm looking for around 130 BHP as a nice tourer with 'fun' option on the foot. But have a growing new list of things to do (based on my use so far) - Raise the rear level (I think I need an inch), better seals for the doors, higher clutch bite point ??, vent in the bonnet (I think it is running hot) - I am thinking side holes near the bulkhead to encourage through flow. Possible sump guard.....
