although my reasons are somewhat trivial, I think stepping away from the ford basis especially the smaller ones would loose the "charm" of the car a little, by which I mean the original 2+2 was always referred to as a Fiesta (a fun to drive car at the time) in a party frock" etc, I think that image could still be captivated using newer fiesta or Ka donors, if it becomes Japanese or German based it could end up "over teccy" if that is. a word, - too involved and less fun to build or even drive, it was and should remain a simple and fun car to build and drive in the same way that the original mini gained its success I agree the interior should be more car specific but an option could be to use the donor dash and door cards or simple fibreglass shells that fit the same way but look more tailored to the car, this way the budget builder can use the donor parts and the more involved build can be updated
