This might seem like a shot in the dark but compared to what's going on why not?

Has at any time the battery been totally disconnected from the car? If yes then the optimised parameters collected over the last 20 good starts would have been removed from the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) which maintains the optimised parameters for your engine collected by the ECU over a period of driving over various conditions - a sort of self tuning for want of a better description (but not quite that explicit). Under such circumstances the instructions given for setting the ECU back into "Learn Mode" are as follows:

"From initial Battery-on, start the engine. Idle at low idle speed for 3 minutes then raise speed to >1200 rev/min and hold for 2 minutes, after which the vehicle should be driven for a minimum of 5 miles to relearn the settings."

After having fitted a number of new batteries and had flat batteries, I have found this to be an effective procedure.

If this procedure is not followed, the ECU gets decidedly upset and takes a good number of miles to forgive you for the omission - I have arrived at one of the Southern Luncheon Meetings having consumed nearly half a tank to drive from Shoreham to the other side of Southampton in somewhat bad mood because of the above omission with my H4 - the return journey was fine! My Beauford consumed gallons whilst just in the drive during the built before I finally tried to engage brain and did the homework to find out why.

Good luck!

Hamish

Wednesday 27th April: the travelling auto electrician has visited.
Replacing the
Air mass flow sensor / meter has been tried twice, (making the
situation worse), I am assured
that all hoses/pipes/clamps etc etc are tight and leak free...so
tomorrow a replacement ECU
(second hand off the electrician guy) is to be tried. Knowing that I
don't understand what's being
done doesn't help build my confidence in the guys doing the job:
Hamish's comment about the
scatter-gun approach seems particularly shrewd at the moment!
Have a great time at Stoneleigh eveyone: as I work Saturdays and on
Bank Holiday Monday I
shan't be there...maybe another time.

Thanks everyone for your helpful and speedy replies. It seems likely that this is just the way it is! Of course, I don't have access to the garage who did the
MOT last year,
so I'll have to go with the flow for a little.
Any more thoughts welcome!
Bill

I have a similar problem on my H4 which has never been resolved...
Garage fitted new Cat/Lambda sensor, check showed no fault codes on
the ECU but emmisions were still slightly over... in the end they
passed it out of sympathy I think. Subsequent MOT's have been
sympathetic in passing it as well although I have tried a replacement
Air flow meter to no avail.
The engine has a slight hunt on tickover which has never been
resolved. It has been off the road for a couple of years whilst we
are renovating the house we are in and the plan when I get it back on
the road is to install a Megajolt ECU as a prelude to doing some
engine upgrades which will either pinpoint the issue or at least be
able to lean the mixure out for the MOT!
Cheers
Allan
