It's little to do I think with the perceived value - it's that there
are two markets.

The people that want a slashtop for the summer are looking mostly at a
cheap MX5 or MGB or one or two others - available for a grand or so,
and throw it away in six months.

Then there are people who want a kit, but don't want to bother with
the hassle of SVA and registration, or like me they want something to
rip to bits and rebuild to suit themselves.

Both parties want something cheap and largely cheerful.

Those who have built a kit knows how much work and expense has gone
into it - but the only people who might be prepared to spend that sort
of money are often equally happy to spend it on a new kit and do it
themselves.

Really, the *value* of the car is not the same as the *cost* - what we
need is sensible rebuild prices for the value, something approaching
the cost. But they're never going to do that when open market prices
are used as the value.
