I have now owned 5 kit cars in all...2 Spartan Roadsters, a Rickman Space Ranger, a Marlin Berlinetta and 2 Quanta...a Q plate saloon and an H4. I'm one of the guys barnacle describes as one of those " people who want a kit, but don't want to bother with the hassle of SVA and registration, or like me they want something to rip to bits and rebuild to suit themselves." In fact there are aspects of the whole thing I couldn't do myself...like painting...and there are aspects that I've learnt as I've gone along (like wiring). Each of my cars was bought with the idea of to some extent rebuilding to suit me. All have had to be a second or hobby car...as only the 2nd Spartan was durable enough to use all the year round...and that suffered from icing in the carb on a cold morning. I believe that more or less every kit car that comes up for sale fits into one of two categories. Firstly, the car that has been built to a budget for a quick sale, usually built by a semi professional, looks pretty good but possibly mechanically suspect after a couple of months, and Secondly, the "abandoned project"..this may be running...may be well loved...but for some reason the owner has chosen to part company with it. This will almost certainly be over priced...will have minor irritating faults that will be fiddly (or costly) to fix, and will certainly be described as being far better than it actually is. The Marlin was a first category...looked beautiful...but had a lot of little things to fix quite soon after I got it. My H4 is probably the best kit car I have owned. Now. It was category 2 when I bought it, as were my first Spartan, my Rickman and my first Quantum. In each case, I sold a better car than I had bought..and probably lost money. The H4 has cost quite a lot to get into the state it's now in....but it's still not quite as I want it....so I will continue....it's my hobby...my fishing rod / shot gun / boat / garden etc. and as such, is always going to be worth more to me than the price I might get for it if I put it up for sale. Barnacle is right when he points out the confusion between value and cost. I would like a decent Quantum Saloon / Coupe....but I don't want a CVH powered one, mine must have a Zetec engine with power steering and decent brakes....so when I go looking, I'll be weighing up the purchase cost against the added cost of getting it into the condition I want and to the specification I want as well. Isn't that what we kit car people do? Bill Jackson

The people that want a slashtop for the summer are looking mostly at a cheap MX5 or MGB or one or two others - available for a grand or so, and throw it away in six months. Then there are people who want a kit, but don't want to bother with the hassle of SVA and registration, or like me they want something to rip to bits and rebuild to suit themselves. Both parties want something cheap and largely cheerful. Those who have built a kit knows how much work and expense has gone into it - but the only people who might be prepared to spend that sort of money are often equally happy to spend it on a new kit and do it themselves. C But they're never going to do that when open market prices are used as the value.
