Hi Hamish,
thanks for your information regarding the tow bar issue,  im
hoping
to do a bit more camping and use a small trailer. Do you happen to know
what year of Mondeo the tow bar came from     Tks Andy

Hi,

Yes my tow-bar is based on a Mondeo Estate drawbar attached each side via
its fixed flanges to a piece of heavy duty 2"angle iron to the underside of
the boot structure and secured by a mirror image piece of angle iron on the
inside of the boot by 3 off M10 bolts each side from memory.  The spacing
was highly fortuitous in that it did not encroach on the inner boot space
and formed a useful divider to keep stuff to either side of the boot.  The
carpet fitted exactly between the two pieces of angle iron.  I have pulled
stuff way beyond the expected capability of the boot floor (it is quite
thick!) with no apparent distress after what must be approaching 10 years.
The H4 is firmly held together and hence it is possible to expect the fibre
glass to be used for load bearing.  I would not even think of doing such
things on my Beauford, where the body was designed to be held on to the
chassis by only 2 off M6 bolts at the rear.  IVA changed all of that!!!

The only thing I changed from the Mondeo unit was the actual tow ball
attachment square tube as the Mondeo unit put the ball at the wrong height.
I just happened to have an identical sized unit from a Fiat X19 unit that I
had saved for posterity that was ideal.  At one stage I sent a photo spread
of the manufacture of the above to one of the former editors but  it
probably was not of interest at the time for QM.  In our present
circumstances it is doubtful whether I can find the photos in a reasonable
time as they would be on a backup somewhere.  I might be able to get the car
on ramps sometime in the future when the pressure has eased off in pricing
up our possessions for the insurance company in order to get money to
refurnish our house.

Hope this is of help,

Hamish

Andy,
Yes it is possible, but I don't have any details.  The only person I know
who has fitted a towbar to an H4 is Hamish, who might be able to reply a bit
later, however he is not the only person who has done it.

It could be worth a call to Eddie Ruskin at Quantum Kit Cars as he may have
further information.

Regards,
Steve
