Ford engines are no different, they dot stamp the numbers onto a unpainted
section on the front of the block and it rusts off.
Just make something new up and stamp it in.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] DVLA don't like engines with no number...
My V5 has been at the DVLA for some time now, trying to register the
change of engine. Unfortunately, the numbers on these Fiat engines are
difficult to read at the best of times and completely illegible on
this one... Joe - the guy I built it with, and who supplied the engine
and required receipt, just got a call from them, so now he's
ferretting like mad through the pile of paperwork for cars he's
scrapped, trying to find the original V5 for that engine...
