Ford have a strict code relating to year of manufacture - The Burton
catalogue contains a table of letters vs. years. 

My 1800  Zetec has no number on it whatsoever!  It came via Old Q as a
Kit-in-a-box with a separate engine plate from Ford Industrial Division.  My
2.0 DOHC for the Beauford had a very distinct mark on the timing cover,
which of course was not the one in the V5C for the donor.  This caused me
much hassle in getting it properly registered prior to IVA as the donor V5C
was required as proof of ownership.  The log book went back and forth about
three times before they got it right and then they put the wrong chassis
number in the Beauford V5C, which did not come to notice until the first
MOT!  A touch of too much work for too few people at DVLA methinks!

Ford engines are no different, they dot stamp the numbers onto a unpainted
section on the front of the block and it rusts off.

Just make something new up and stamp it in.
