Errr. I have to confess that my normal car is a Jag XJ6 that is 14 years old now (bought when it was 8) and I am planning on keeping that until it is 20 years old before I think of doing anything drastic like replacing it. If all goes to plan that will be a depreciation of £400 per year! So Maybe there are a few production cars worth having........... !

5 years is quoted for a "normal car" with I presume average mileage of 12k, so a kit car doing say 3000 miles should in theory last 20 years - probably not as long as that but should be comparable with a decent paint job.

Wrap material is getting better all the time and the options are also increasing as more people are using it.

Eddie,
Did he say how long it lasts? As vinyl shrinks. Can you ask him?

Hi Bob

That's intresting that you mention a vinyl wrap. My graphics man does
that and a whole car can cost £700 to£1000 ish
Much cheaper than a re spray

I used 1 pack enamel from a local supplier called Autoscot. I can't remember the actual paint manufacturer but will look out the tin and let you know. The colour was Cadmium Yellow. I used a roller for the majority but got a few spray cans made up for awkward areas like the door checks. It's horrible stuff to spray though as the offspray stays wet and gets everywhere you don't want it.

As a home job, I was happy with the results but it's nowhere near as good as a professional spray job. I call it a ten foot paint job - as long as you are over 10 feet away it looks good. Enamel tends to chip as well, so there are now some chips on the front but I'm still glad I did it.

I think I would go for a vinyl wrap next time but that's a whole new subject.

  Saw it - Well done.
I've been an advocate of brush painting GRP, but everybody seems to want to go with spraying. I'd be interested on your thoughts. Who's paint did you use? I contacted International paints, who considered for a car my plans to brush paint rather than roller were a good idea. Their guidance to roller, then tip-off with brush is ideal for larger items (such as a yatch) though. I've painted a car before, using single-pack polyurethane alkyd, and although the finish was great the paint went dull after a few months! I'll certainly won't be using that again. The single pack can't be flatted down either - I believe the 2 pack can. I have to get a paint mixed up to match the Oxford Blue of my Q saloon so that I can brush paint my "Quantum Sleep" matching folding caravan - The only place I can find which will mix a matching paint for brushing is Witham Paints (unless you can advise)

See the "Wall of Fame" in the latest edition of Complete Kit Car. There are a couple of pics and a wee write up on my Q
