I think it is a safety thing associated with competition cars primarily, 
although this shouldn't stop you using it if you want a bit more reassurance. 

Mine has a double cable linkage but has only ever had one cable fitted from 
what I can see. My cable loops around the front of the engine and back to the 
linkage which pulls front to back.
