I take it when you say the exhaust “was scraping the floor” you mean it was
touching the ground not the floor of the car.

This is the problem with the Mk2 Fiesta exhausts, the entire rear of the system
is offset across the car and only has supports on the outside of the system.
It relies on the clamp between the exhaust and the downpipe to stop the exhaust
system twisting as you’ve found.
It maybe that you’ve got a slight mismatch in size between the new downpipe and
the old exhaust system and the joint can’t be tightened enough to stop the
rotation.
If there is a gap you maybe able to shim it using a strip of metal cut off a
old tin can or similar.
Use silicone sealant on the joint as well, works much better than the old
exhaust paste.

This is why i think the downpipes crack as well, they are taking all the
twisting force from the weight of the exhaust system trying to turn.
I’ve added some extra support brackets on the exhaust on my Mk2 and Quantum 2+2
and saloon so that the exhaust system is self supporting without being
connected to the downpipe.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] moving exhaust

hi again, firstly a big thank you to everyone who helped me out with the
earlier stuff, i bought a new downpipe and fitted it easily but now have a
problem... after fitting the downpipe i took the car out for a quick drive to
see and heard scraping, the exhaust had twisted (and therefore dropped) and was
scraping the floor, i took the car back jacked it up again and reajusted the
exhaust again tightened the bolts further and gave the exhaust a good shaking
and it was very solid, i dropped the car back down and took it out again but
the same problem occurred, got back in and the exhaust had twisted again, has
anyone had this problem before?
thanks
