Derek,
That is a difficult question to answer, but personally I would make the 
modification.  This mod was available direct from QSC (someone will correct 
me if I'm wrong) and will help with the future proofing of the car, since 
the Zetec being newer, should be more available for longer.

As for the treatment, maybe consider a cold galvanisation process before 
power coating?
