That sounds like the longer one is a tripod roller joint whereas the
shorter one uses balls (about 6) instead.
The tripod joints i thought were only used on the Mk3/4 Escort and Mk3
Fiesta not on the Mk2 Fiesta.
They are similar dimensions overall and the bigger joints can be fitted
to the same Mk2 shafts as the smaller joint.
I used the Mk3 Fiesta joints on the 2+2 as they are stronger, but on the
Saloon i used the Mk2 joints for the reason you mention.
