The sump is fine for taking the weight, just put a block of wood between it and
the top of an axle stand.
Jack the engine/gearbox up slightly under the gearbox, unbolt the cross member
from the body (i usually remove it completely from the gearbox), then lower the
engine sump down onto the block on the axle stand.
With the top engine mount still attached it will be quite stable, just make
sure the top mount is done up tightly !

If you can borrow an engine crane you can use that to lower the gearbox to the
ground and lift it back up again.
It can be done on a jack but it’s a fun balancing act.
What will help a lot is a couple of 4” or so long M10 bolts with the heads cut
off (cut a screwdriver slot in the end).
Screw these into the top 2 gearbox holes on the engine.
Then you can lift the gearbox onto these 2 studs and they will take most of the
weight while you are jiggling it around trying to get the splines to line up.
If the gearbox doesn’t want to go back onto the splines get somebody to slowly
turn the engine over with a spanner on the crank pulley, when the splines line
up it should go on.

It’s worth spending time getting the clutch as central as you can, one of the
plastic tools from Halfords work a lot better then a socket extension and
trying to do it by eye.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Clutch change on Saloon

Hi Folks

Just thinking ahead a bit.....When my clutch gives up (and I know it’s on its
way out) I realise I’m gonna have to lower the gearbox a bit to clear the body
work, what’s the best way of doing that?
Can the sump take all the weight if I use it as a jacking down point, or do I
need to put the jack under the gearbox to lower it and then support the sump on
blocks while I have the gearbox off?
I’m not looking forward to this job as I’ll have to do it on the drive......
