Hi all, Just to give you an update, i have now got a CVH engine at home in bits that looks like a good candidate for 003. It’s a pre 1986 CVH so it could even be the engine from 003. It was one i didn’t remember i had in the corner of the workshop at my parents. Andy, what engine number does the V5 have on it ?
It looks like it was rebuilt a relatively low mileage ago, cranks has been reground 0.5mm undersize on all bearings and bores are 0.5mm oversize. But apart from a couple of scores (dirt particles) on some bearing shells it all looks pretty unworn, if it wasn’t for the scores i would reuse the old bearings. They aren’t expensive from Burton though so i will put a new set in. Pistons and bores are all fine, a quick hone to remove a tiny bit of surface rust at the top that’s all they need. Oil pump I’ve yet to look inside, i will replace it if there is any scoring. Needs a new water pump, cam belt, tensioner etc I’ve not looked at the head yet but hopefully it was reconditioned at the same time as the bottom end. The sump would be just about useable after sandblasting but it’s the pre 1986 one without the reinforcing bars down the sides to stop it distorting when the bolts are tightened. It might be worth fitting the later type of sump (if the are no other differences) but i don’t have one. I’ve found an early carb (square top) on a manifold, but only a plastic air filter housing, 003 did have a metal one. I will see if i can get a refurb kit for it. Got accelerator cable (not certain if pedal end is correct, can somebody take a pic of the 003 pedal) but will need a choke cable. Petrol pump is probably worth putting a new one on. I also have early Escort and early (with ecu) and late Fiesta distributors so we can pick from those. The early Escort one was what was on 003 i think. Also got 2 exhaust manifolds and downpipe, both would be fine after sandblasting and some EHT paint. Got a good flywheel, new clutch cover and plate but no release bearing, need the normal sort, not low lift. Got a couple of cam belt covers. I don’t have a good undented cam cover, anybody here got one ? Does the club still get a discount from Burton Power ?, shall i put a shopping list together and let somebody who is good at haggling (Andy ?) order it. That’s about it at the moment.
