Wow thanks for the info I am now armed to sort the beast out. Although the
engine is a an RST it came from an Escort and as I have the build story as a
kind soul sent me a magazine article all about my cars build in the 90's.
I do not have the LSD and the cars loom is a blend of XR2 from the donor and an
engine loom from the Escort. It would be nice to fit an LSD as I could get more
of the power down on corner exit when the car is loaded on one side.
I have just fitted a new starter as the old one was flagging and I have made an
alloy cover to shield it from some of the heat.
I think I will seek out a B5.
Thanks again.
Jon

As Steve says, the gearbox models go BC, B5 and IB5
But they are all basically the same gearbox, just with various improvements,
and on the later IB5's a switch to cable gearchange and or hydraulic clutches.
The BC which yours probably is if it's an Escort RS Turbo box used the end of
the output shaft as the inner surface for a roller bearing and after a while
the surface of the shaft starts to break up.
The B5 and then the IB5 had a proper inner bearing race pressed on the end of
the output shaft.

The easiest upgraded gearbox for yours is probably one from a late Mk3 (1996)
Fiesta, this would be a B5 gearbox.
Everything would bolt straight on, you might just need to swap some of the
studs around on the gearbox casing where the brackets bolt on but you can take
these from your old gearbox.
The gearchange and driveshafts are compatible.
If you want to keep the LSD from your current gearbox then that can be
swapped into the new gearbox.

  On mine and Matthews 2+2's i used a IB5 gearbox from a Mk5 or 6 Escort Zetec
1.6.
These have the advantage of moving the starter to the rear of the engine and
out from behind the turbo but that only works on a Zetec, on the CVH the
starter would would hit the oil filter.
These are a bit more of a pain to fit as they changed the size of the spigot
that the clutch release bearing slides over and finding a release bearing that
fits it that isn't low lift is a bit of a pain.
I machined the spigot down on ours to take a bearing that could be found.
I believe there are some IB5 with a front starter on the Mk5 Escorts in the
1.4 CVH and early 1.6 Zetec Escort.
I don't know what size release bearing these take.

You can tell an IB5 because it has the square plastic oil breather on the top
of the gearbox (instead of the pipe on the end cover) and a lot more ribs on
the casing.
The RS Turbo LSD will fit straight into the IB5 gearbox as well with the IB5
bearings fitted to it.

    Jon,
Depending on how much you are willing to pay, you might want to look at
what the 'Gearboxman' offers. I've never used their services, but various Ford
forums used to rate them. My information is a few years old now, but if you've
a tuned RS Turbo the gearbox will probably be a weak point. When I first had
my H4 RS Turbo engine tuned the diff destroyed itself within a couple hundred
miles.

In answer to which gearboxes fit, the BC and some IB5 will fit. With the
IB5 gearboxes the starter motor location varies, which is why I believe some
don't fit. No doubt the Oracle that is Jim Hearne will tell you everything you
need to know.

Well it had to happen, I have had my 2+2 RS turbo for 6 years now and it
has been a mostly reliable performer especially at track days where it manages
to punch up amongst some fast machinery.
Last time out however we had brake failure due to a solid pipe that was
hidden to me sliced by the alternator pully and I am baffled as to why it was
routed even near it! It isnt now though as that problem is fixed but the
gearbox is now rumbling badly and either replacement or rebuild is needed.
Any advice on boxes gratefully required, what boxes fit? are some
stronger and better than others? I have one piece good condition driveshafts so
want to keep them.
Lastly does anyone have a good box they want to exchage for loot?

      Thanks in anticipation
