My temp gauge responds, but seems consistently 1/4 of the scale below where it
should be. I suspect it's an issue with the sender, and if I earth the sender
wire and get a full scale deflection on the gauge that will pretty much be
confirmation. The sender is a genuine Ford one. Over the last 6 years I've used
2 Ford thermostats and a Quinton Hazell thermostat, which is the most
successful so far. The first Ford one stuck open after a couple of years' use,
the second started (but to a lesser extent) to get the same symptom, and I
changed to the QH one (as the locally available 'brand name' one)

If I am right in suggesting that a thermostat that fails to open correctly
stops the flow of coolant from the engine to the radiator and that one which
opens too soon or sticks open, or is missing altogether causes the engine to
run cold because the engine coolant flows through the radiator at all times
what is read on the temperature gauge depends on the location of the
temperature sensor.

If a gauge is working at all and sensing the temperature of the coolant
within the engine block there seems to be little possibility that the gauge
would not respond in the same way as the sensor for the electric fan. If it is
hot enough for the fan to run it must show on the gauge.
On the other hand the temperature gauge might be monitoring the temperature
of the coolant within the radiator or some other point between the thermostat
and the radiator, thus showing a low temperature because of the thermostat
failing to open.

Thermostat test - I believe the time honoured test is to put it in a pan of
water and bring it to the boil.

T/C engines - RS turbo thermostats are designed to open at a lower
temperature than those for n.a. engines.

Funny you shuld say that, as I thought I had the problem again...... however
it just seems to be the gauge not moving, as the heater gets hot within a
mile. For the last year the gauge has never gone above O on the NORM section
of the scale, even when it's very hot and the fan comes on. I shall be
getting the meter out, and earthing the wire as a test once we have some
  spring weather.

  Hi All,

I have fitted various thermostats in the past and most seem to control the
coolant temp fine for a few months and then get colder and colder until the
running temp hits the bottom of the gauge. Occasionally one I have had runs
for years and is fine. I recall there was a thread about this some time
ago, what was the outcome? Is there a particular make we need to buy? At
present I have one of each in the two Q’s so see the direct comparison every
week as I drive one then the other, so I know I am not just imagining it!
