I am too mean to run without a stat as the fuel consumption goes from 35 mpg
to 25 mpg and the oil is not as hot as it should be and does not lubricate
properly.

Both the coolant temperature sender and the fan switch take readings from
the head in a cvh don't they, just in 2 different locations? Gauge at the
front of the head and fan switch on the distributor side?
I've run without a thermostat a number of times but its not ideal. I think
I'd rather have an additional manual fan or an override than no stat
