Thanks for the answers/comments. The engine used to have the standard inlet manifold, but is not running with throttle bodies, so I can no longer vent into the inlet.
The rocker cover breather was just venting downwards - it doesn't look like that pipe have been blowing out oil. The crankcase (one below the piston level, was being fed into the old inlet and it was these that I was considering connecting together, but I now realise that wouldn't be a good idea. Not having a vacuum to draw out the fumes we will need to look at some form of catch tank set up.
