The zetec E was originally called the zeta (I think, have memory fade after all
these years!) and the Zetec-s was originally called the Sigma engine.
Apparently Alfa Romeo (IIRC) have 'copyrighted' the greek alphabet for their
use so Ford had to change the names. I think marketing got heavily involved,
(and I can see the logic behind it) and calling them all zetec gives a
'connection' so the customer thinks his moderately powered engine is the 'same'
as the highest powered racing engine.

Unfortunately not an easy one.
They are completely different engines.
The 1600 is a Zetec or Zetec-E, the 1400 is a Yamaha Zetec-S (no, i don't
know why Ford called everything Zetec).
For a start, the inlet and exhaust are on opposite sides of the engine, the
engine and gearbox mountings are in different places, completely different
engine management.
Gearbox and gearchange are different as well, also hydraulic clutch.
The only good news is i'm pretty sure it will fit in the engine bay as it's
physically smaller.
Apart from some Xtremes has anybody put a Zetec-S in a Quantum ?
