The Mk2 fuel tank is larger than the Mk1. Ford did thhis by making the Mk2 tank deeper than the Mk1 Tank. If your current fuel tank has taken a beating, fitting an even larger one is going to cause some big problems with ground clearance. If you were to "lift" the tank up, the body underneath the rear seat would need to be reshaped which in turn would prevent the back seat from being used.
