I did something similar on mine except the bearing is about 40mm of PTFE with a flange on the end. The shaft is stainless and held into the subframe with a set screw so it can only rotate in the bearing.
I think the trouble with a lot of 2+2 bonnets is that people put the pivot bolts in from the subframe and let the bonnet pivot on the bolt threads.
