Jim’s method is good, ISTR there is also an alternative (from Haynes manual?) to tighten nut to 20NM then slacken off by ¼ turn IIRC. Jim, correct me if I’m wrong, but aim is to not have excessive play, but more importantly there must be some play. Martin

Assuming the rear brakes are Mk2 Fiesta as normal on the saloon, there should not be a spacer between the bearings. I can only assuming somebody fitted one as they were incorrectly over tightening the hub nut. On the Mk1 and Mk2 fiesta the hub nut is only tightened enough to take the play out of the bearings. Fit the wheel and feel for play in the bearings by rocking the rim , very gently tighten the nut until you can't feel the play anymore. Spin the wheel and tighten the nut a little more until you can feel a slight drag and then back it off very slightly. Then fit the cage and the split pin onto the nut to lock it. I have come across 'crush tubes' between bearings and solid spacers with shims to get correct bearing play but it's hard to imagine Ford drums were made so precise as to be able to use a spacer without shims. With the new drums and the spacer in place there is too much play in the bearings, in a non covid world i would probably go to the local workshop get 10 thou taken off and shim as needed, however with covid it's not an option, i can't see why they are needed so can any one tell me why leaving them out would be a bad idea ? -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Quantum Owners Group" group.
