As an alternate data point, I'm running the latest and greatest
graphics update and the error persists. I did not try software
rendering - however I believe Dan and I share the same hardware
config.
If you have an apple developer login you should probably file a
radar, as bug reports reported here are not officially entered into
the bug tracking system (unless another ind soul does the work for
you )

Switching to software rendering did get rid of the issue.
Interesting. Thanks, Chris. I wonder if the LGU fixes this....

The attached composition has the Blob.qtz example composition
within a Render in Image set to 32 bit format. On my system,
this causes the blobs not to blend right, i.e., a black box
appears around each particle. Setting it to 16bit also shows
black boxes. Setting the RII format to 8bit gets rid of the
black boxes. Is this expected behavior or a bug? Thanks very
much.
Hold down alt/option, click Quartz Composer, Preferences, and
enable "SoftwareCoreImage" and "SoftwareOpenGL" under the
"(Editor)" tab, restart QC, and see if the issue persists. My
video card doesn't support > 8 bpp, and does not exhibit this
bug. If it goes away when using software rendering, it's a bug
with the driver or something. Make sure to disable those
'features' once you're done testing, performance will be Really
Bad while it's disabled :)
