It's pretty much stock, from a hardware perspective.
There's your problem : You're using the Tiger Version of QC on a Leopard Machine. Be sure to install the Leopard Developer Tools, not the Tiger ones.
Is Quartz Composer.app's Icon a TV-screen like image with NTSC color bars, or a blueprint with a magic wand? The former is the Tiger version, which you don't want, while the latter is the Leopard version.
