Thanks vade :)
question-- is this technique applicable to QCViews, or does one have
to use the lower-level QCrenderer? I think ideally i'd like both of
the compositions to be window-based, with the option for the 2nd one
of going fullscreen and capturing it's display. I'm sure I can get it
working using QCrenderers, but it seems easier to use the QCviews.

I forgot one last important note while copying / pasting. You also
have to call renderAtTime: on the destination renderer, else you
will not actually render/display the billboard (in this case,
v001DestinationRenderer)
Sorry for the confusion the code would be:
[v001MixerRenderer renderAtTime:time arguments:nil];
mixerResult = [v001MixerRenderer
valueForOutputKey:@"EffectOutput1" ofType:@"QCImage"];
[v001DestinationRenderer setValue:mixerResult
forInputKey:@"DestinationInput1"];
[v001DestinationRenderer renderAtTime:time arguments:nil];
