You are probably better off going to QCRenderers should you want to
add any sort of custom features in the future. It really is not so
hard, and allows much more flexibility. I have not played mush with
QCViews so I cant really say, but im sure you could finagle it.
Id say go with renderers though.

Thanks vade :)
question-- is this technique applicable to QCViews, or does one have
to use the lower-level QCrenderer? I think ideally i'd like both
of the compositions to be window-based, with the option for the 2nd
one of going fullscreen and capturing it's display. I'm sure I can
get it working using QCrenderers, but it seems easier to use the
QCviews.

I forgot one last important note while copying / pasting. You also
have to call renderAtTime: on the destination renderer, else you
will not actually render/display the billboard (in this case,
v001DestinationRenderer)
Sorry for the confusion the code would be:
[v001MixerRenderer renderAtTime:time arguments:nil];
mixerResult = [v001MixerRenderer
valueForOutputKey:@"EffectOutput1" ofType:@"QCImage"];
[v001DestinationRenderer setValue:mixerResult
forInputKey:@"DestinationInput1"];
[v001DestinationRenderer renderAtTime:time arguments:nil];
