Thats definitely a workflow gripe Ive had as well. If you enable show private patches in the hidden QC prefs, you gain access to a "Log" patch which prints to the QC Editors log view, which you can use to trigger non consumer patches to run. I tend to use that technique, since it works for all input types (as far as I am aware).
