Okay, I finally did the obvious and searched the list.  We have covered this
territory a few times before, and Chris Wright @ Apple was able to tell us that
the apple list of OpenCL supporting cards is not dispositive:

"It's potentially correct/up-to-date, but it may not be enough for QC.  QC
requires some additional CL features, and it might be those extensions that the
card doesn't support."

Intriguing, but vague.  "Some additional features" are required, and "those
extensions" may not be supported.  I guess the output of the OpenCL Context
Info patch is what passes for documentation of supported cards.

Ah, well.  Par for the course.

@george: The OpenGL Info patch reports the Radeon HD 4850 as Render Device with
8 texture units and Max Texture Size of 8192.
So QC definitely sees the gpu.
It just does not choose to use it for OpenCL.

@vade: By "image buffer support" do you mean OpenGL context sharing?  I get the
sense that the AMD 4xxx series has some design limitations in local data
sharing.  OpenCL / Open GL versions above the OpenCL 1.0 and OpenGL 3.3
supposedly supported by OS X 10.6 and Radeon 4850 seem to focus a good deal on
better OpenCL / OpenGL integration.  Maybe Quartz Composer wants some of that
sharing goodness that was only supported by extensions and specific cards back
in the SL birthing timeframe?

I guess it is pretty clear that the Radeon HD 4850 is does not support OpenCL
acceleration in the context of SL and Quartz Composer.  I just wish I could see
the Apple document(s) that told me so, since what I have seen "suggests"
support.
