It should work just fine.  Current-ish Airs (past few years at least) will have 
similar capabilities to MBPs, they just won't be as fast about it, and they'll 
probably emit more fan noise if you start taxing them.

(Disclosure:  My home machines are a Sandybridge Air (2011) and a Haswell Air 
(2013), I haven't had any serious problems with either doing non-trivial 
graphics stuff, just lower framerates).

Sandybridge won't support GPU-based OpenCL, but Ivybridge and Haswell will.
