By sheer chance, it booted in UEFI mode at one point, and with this mode the graphics display worked OK. And Qubes installed without further problem. I haven't gone back to find out what differences there are in the boot sequences for legacy mode and UEFI mode, but it might be worth checking if they are different in some way.
