I had a similar issue recently with anon-whonix Thunderbird refusing to connect to the internet. I simply changed the manual proxy settings (Preferences>Network & Disk Space>Connection Settings) from the default of 127.0.0.1 port 9102 to 127.0.0.1 port 9150, which restored the connection.
