Actually, you probably want at least a Pentium-60 just so the OS will have RDTSC available, but you can make do with a 486 as well, you just have to use a slightly older kernel afaik.

My Stratum-1 Motorola Oncore UT+ was running off a Pentium-133 for many years, delivering sub-us performance most of the time. The current Pentium-II/Pentium-III boxes are less stable. :-(
