It seems to me that an abstraction that allows for the year is more
general than one that doesn't. It should be the driver's responsibility
for fixing up cases where the device doesn't provide the year, with
maybe the help of a driver support utility library routine.
There are various simple ways to hand over variable information in a
universal structure. length, capability flags...
