You should also consider possible problems with the serial cable. The RS232-C standard says fifty feet is the maximum length. Many people have used cable runs far longer than fifty feet. It frequently works but when it doesn't you'll find sympathy in the dictionary!

Use high quality cable.  The cable run should avoid fluorescent lights,
electric motors, and other sources of interference!
