I don't think it is a cable problem.  The 9600 baud serial data comes
through just fine.  I can read all the data from the GPS just fine and
it is logged without error.   I'm using Cat-5 cable inside conduit.
I'm still suspecting the problem is related to setting up Linux PPS.
The MAX232 chip is actually a very good cable driver
