An uninterruptible sleep state isn't something that you can explicitly
enter from user space. This suggest a kernel or device driver bug.

I'll talk to the NetBSD list and see what they have to say but it's very odd considering everything else on the system was still working including the serial ports. I have gpsd running and it was still receiving data from the attached GPS receiver and responding to remote network requests from a status summary page on another machine.
