I did it to save one byte each time it's used in the source...  j/k ;-)

I did it because I thought that was the preferred idiom based on how
PATCH is substituted in bin/patch-wrapper.in.  I don't mind changing it
if you prefer (and see my forthcoming reply to Andreas).
