I tried to find the answer to this in the list archive, as i feel pretty certain it exists somewhere, but somewhere midway through the second page of older posts, each emssage's page just gives an error 403, forbidden. weird. Also, I don't seem to get all list messages, for instance I didn't get either reply to my original message. I did see them in the archive though, so thanks. I'll try messing with the on screen keyboard, I wouldn't have thought of that.
I have the problem I've seen expressed elsewhere, that I can only get one instrument at a time playing through a synth. THis refers both to my Yamaha psr85 keyboard, and to vst synths. I'll keep hacking away.... but if anyone has some hints then let me know. I read one hint to set all midi track values, but that didn't help.
