I had one R-390 (non A) that I restored for a friend. The RF deck slugs
were packed with grease in all of the bores. There was some pistoning
action going on there trying to tune across the band.

It ended up being more trouble than it was worth; The solvents that I
needed to use to remove the white lithium grease caused problems with the
enamel on some of the windings. Even the racks of slugs were deteriorating
from the saturation and the Q had changed so it necessitated an entire
retune of things normally left alone.

What started as a favor that should have taken maybe a day for a tuneup and
testing ended up taking more than two weeks. They then started to complain
about how long it was taking and I was explaining that they weren't paying
me for my time. The friendship suffered for that; I don't restore radios
for other people any more.
