Actually it is possible although there will be some limitations in how
certain methods treat it:
> dd <- seq(as.Date("2011-01-01"), as.Date("2011-01-09"), by = "day")
> dim(dd) <- c(3, 3)
> dd
[1] "2011-01-01" "2011-01-02" "2011-01-03" "2011-01-04" "2011-01-05"
[6] "2011-01-06" "2011-01-07" "2011-01-08" "2011-01-09"
> dd[1,1]
[1] "2011-01-01"
> dd[1,]
[1] "2011-01-01" "2011-01-04" "2011-01-07"
