I am pretty sure it is something to do with my local installation. I have R running on 6 other systems with no proble.s
1] R --vanilla (same bevhavior, does not finish) 2] I will reinstall and report back shortly if there is still an issue.

The following test also appears to hang.

Works on Windows and several other OSs.
Do you have a local copy of prcomp() (which is different from the original one)?
What happens if you start R with --vanilla and try again?
What happened after
make check
during your R installation? make check should have reported an error here (or hang itself)....
