Thanks. This is now OBE, I downloaded the R-Patched version from 30 May, added the VR bundle and am all set for now.

That's because R-devel and R-patched have a workaround for a bug in the latest gcc: see the NEWS file.

The following test also appears to hang.

Works on Windows and several other OSs.
Do you have a local copy of prcomp() (which is different from the original one)?
What happens if you start R with --vanilla and try again?
What happened after make check during your R installation? make check should have reported an error here (or hang itself)....
