"An Introduction to R" by Venables, Smith, and the R Development Core Team is a nicely written little paperback that is even easier on the pocketbook ($14 on Amazon.com) than Dalgaard's . It's a nicely written basic introduction the the language that makes no attempt to teach statistics.
