There are quite a few helpful free contributions--under contributed go figure-- on the R site. "Using R for Data Analysis and Graphics" by John Maindonald (PDF [702kB], data sets and scripts are available at JM's homepage). I found this a big help( Thanks to John Maindonald) as well as trying to solve some problems on the help list and seeing how the "pros" do it properly.
