We may be able to help if you tell us at what stage in the install process 
this happens and quote the exact message.

Note that you will need libz.so and not just libz.so.1, so it is likely 
you have a development RPM missing.  On FC3

gannet% rpm -q --whatprovides /usr/lib/libz.so
zlib-devel-1.2.1.2-3.fc3
gannet% rpm -q --whatprovides /usr/lib/libz.so.1
zlib-1.2.1.2-3.fc3
