I've just committed a patch to the rgl source on R-forge.r-project.org following Simon's advice. You'll get it if you download version 0.94.1118 or newer. (It may take a while for R-forge to build the tarball; it's been slow lately.) There are a lot of other changes there compared to what's on CRAN, and it doesn't include a bug fix for the dealloc bug I mentioned in another email, so I don't recommend using this version: but I'd appreciate hearing if it fixes your problem.
