I don't know about harbingers. Back in '84 I remember reading a piece in the
NYT Magazine making a similar argument, as fashions that year at the big
shows were more or less all inspired by _The Road Warrior_. (More
specifically, and problematically from the view of the Times writer, by The
Feral Kid.)

Anyway, I'm not sure what it would mean for fashion to be SF'nal. If they're
just following movies or TV shows -- i.e., following fashion -- that doesn't
strike me as forward-looking. SF'nal fashion to me would be something that
anticipated the new, was a harbinger of the future.

If I really wanted to be provocative, I might argue on that basis that Coco
Chanel was among the most SF'nal of designers. She did anticipate major
societal upheavals by giving women pockets, after all.
