I'm not offended -- mild disgust would be a more accurate way of putting
it.

Community outreach is a great thing. But this is pretend community outreach
-- it's tantamount to saying "we're only interested in you as a member of
our community if you are willing to become a part of Facebook's product
inventory." That pretty effectively slices large swathes out of the
participatory community right away, either because they don't use computers,
don't use social networks, or just won't use Facebook.

Can you participate in any of this without being on Facebook? I'd bet money
that you can, and if anybody criticizes them publicly for the Facebook only
presentation, I'm sure that will come out and be made explicit; but the fact
is that they're not telling you of any other way you can participate other
than making a Facebook-mediated connection via their forums.

>From a technical perspective, there's no reason for that. You can use OpenID
tools to facilitate login via any number of social networking providers and
technically that's probably just as easy to implement as a facebook-only
login. But Facebook has struck a lot of big-content-provider deals, so from
the perspective of someone who comes to this site, sees the D&C domain, and
notices that it's all Facebook-only, this looks like Gannett taking its cut
for being the host and technology provider. Which, if so, would be a great
illustration of why it's not usually a good idea to rely on the largesse of
a commercial content provider.
